This 30 minute investigative documentary examines the Trump administration’s controversial choice to continue detaining asylum seekers during the Covid-19 pandemic. Celeste and Maria, two undocumented women, survive both Covid-19 and human rights abuses while detained at Otay Mesa ICE detention center in California. After their tentative release from detention on bond, Celeste and Maria rejoin their families in the US but must now grapple with their ongoing asylum cases and the possibility of being deported. This story is part of “Here to Stay,” a multimedia reporting series on solutions to resettlement of migrants and refugees amid the global migration crisis. Produced by The GroundTruth Project with support from the MacArthur Foundation, Luce Foundation and Solutions Journalism Network, this series chronicles the challenges migrants face to resettle in new lands in the midst of a pandemic, highlighting approaches that immigrants themselves are employing to improve their quality of life, defend their rights and gain influence in their new communities.
