It is only the first in a series of cruel, ridiculous acts, without many motivations other than ambition, cowardice and idiocy. Paulo Abreu revisits Ubu Roi, Alfred Jarry’s incendiary play, recovering its grotesque, absurdist humor. In contrast with a black-and-white image of limpid beauty, he lets the text speak, using a handful of actors who understand very well what the game is all about. And he projects it toward a timeless universe that questions both the past and the present, and alerts us about the future. UBU is a mirror that reflects the deformed image of this story that repeats itself all the time, first as tragedy, then as farce. Even today, as always, totalitarianism, lies and stupidity go hand in hand.
