Oceans are the true continents — a title that perhaps already contains within itself the resolution of the film. As if to say that the very distances, although creators of loneliness, are the concretization of closeness. Can one, in short, feel united even if distant? In a small Cuban village, Santambrogio seeks the answer by telling three stories: a pair of lovers is about to separate (who knows for how long); an old woman is still living her love affair; a pair of children dream about who they will be when they grow up. In a dense and spiritual black and white (one breathes Salgado, but also the dust of Faulkner) a story of humanity and to Humanity is told, in a Cuba that, torn between past and future, is at a distance from the world out there, connected to it only by the Oceans.
