ÆTHER (Poor Objects) explores the relationship between the physical and digital space. Similar to the title’s play on the word ‘ether’, Shuang Li connects disparate footage – like the imagery of the ring light, a device commonly used by vloggers, cam models, and some of those now working from home and living on screens – with that of the annular solar eclipse. This kaleidoscopic video collage is loosely related to the ancient Chinese myth in which a goddess uses her own body to repair the cracking, clay-based sky. Reflecting on the reversed relationship between the body and its screen representation, the concept of leakage is an underlying theme that runs through the visuals and the script of the two female vloggers as an evaluation of the flawed dissemination between virtual pixelated worlds and backdrops into physical life. The work invites viewers to explore their own perceptions of reality, and to consider the implications of our ever-evolving digital world.
